Microsoft’s Windows Server OS runs on ARM, with help from Qualcomm

Microsoft has warmed up to Qualcomm to make a Windows 10 PC based on its ARM chip, and now the companies are bringing Windows Server OS to ARM.

For the first time ever, Microsoft is expected to show the Windows Server OS running on an ARM server. The server runs on Qualcomm’s Centriq 2400, an ARM-based chip designed for cloud servers.

The server is being shown at the Open Project Compute Summit being held in Santa Clara, California, on Wednesday and Thursday. The ARM-based Windows Server hardware is for Microsoft’s internal use. No information was shared on when Windows Server would be available for ARM servers.

Kubernetes rounds out Azure options, paves way for Windows Server Containers

Google’s Kubernetes container management system is now generally available for users of Microsoft’s Azure Container Service.

ACS support is one of a set of changes Microsoft is rolling out to broaden Azure’s container management options to be more open-ended and competitive. In a blog post, Microsoft proclaimed Azure “the only public cloud platform that provides a container service with the choice of the three most popular open source orchestrators available today.”

Bringing the power to all

Microsoft emphasized “choice” when it originally introduced Azure Container Service. Although it launched without Kubernetes, Azure initially supported Mesosphere DC/OS and Docker Swarm because the majority of Microsoft’s customers used them and the company believed they would be well served by the support.

Qualcomm’s new chip may be too late as ARM server market fades

After more than half a decade in the making, ARM server chips should have struck gold by now, but they haven’t. ARM servers were projected to be approaching a double-digit server market share, but they still are virtually non-existent.

Keeping market realities in mind, Qualcomm earlier this year said it would take a wait-and-watch approach before making a splash with its ARM server chips. While ARM servers adoption has been poor, Qualcomm decided to go ahead and launch the chips.

In the making for two years, Qualcomm’s Centriq 2400 server chips have 48 cores and are now being sent as samples to companies. Volume shipments of the chips will start in the second half next year.

Gain access to an ARM server running Linux OS, through the cloud

If you want to play with an ARM-based server, you can now apply to gain access to one online through the Linaro Developer Cloud.

The cloud service was announced in March but has finally gone live. It’s mainly targeted at developers who want to evaluate ARM servers.

The free service is one way to access ARM servers, which aren’t widely available. Applications go through an approval process, and only those serious about programming for ARM servers will likely be approved.

Developers will get remote access to bare-metal servers with ARM processors. Linaro has said servers will have ARM-based chips from Qualcomm, Cavium, and Huawei, and users will be able to select specific hardware.

Microsoft continues hybrid cloud push with stretchable SQL Server

Microsoft is keeping up its push to provide businesses with hybrid cloud tools by offering a new feature that lets companies stretch their database tables from on-premises infrastructure to its Azure storage service.

Microsoft is launching its SQL Server Stretch Database Service Wednesday, along with the first release candidate beta of SQL Server 2016. The new feature allows database administrators to set up certain tables to stretch from their on-premises infrastructure to Microsoft’s cloud, while still allowing applications to access all the data across both environments.

When a table is set up to use SQL Stretch Database, administrators can specify a length of time after which data is automatically moved from their on-premises SQL Server instance to Azure. Applications querying that database table will be able to see both the data stored on-premises and the data stored in Azure.

It think that the problem is on the router side and not the iPod side. Try reconfiguring your router.

Question by GRIM: How to create a Web Server?
What i want to do is use an existing computer as a web server. I want to host my personal website AND also be able to access files like a “cloud” server. The computer that will be running this “server” will be running Windows XP (more then likely if I can’t get a hold of Windows 7 in the next few weeks)

This computer will house all backups of my documents and pictures, and my website is a forum based site, and more then likely run a game server on it as well down the road.

So please be as detailed as you can, I am computer literate, however more details makes it easier for me to follow.

Also, using a linksys router, not sure what i have to do with that…..

Thanks in advance!!!!

Download apache tomcat.

Unzip it.

Run the apache-tomcat/bin/startup.exe

Now go to http://localhost:8080

You are running your own server! Now you have to program html files for it.

To get it on the web, you sadly need to call your ISP and have them open port 80. It will cost you some money since they think you are running a business. Or you can get hosting from bluehost or godaddy (although godaddy is hard to use and doesn’t host files, it just reserves your domain).

Know better? Leave your own answer in the comments!
